Victoria 3: Pivot of Empire

Project preview

Game Writer and Regional Consultant

Victoria 3 is a grand simulation game by Paradox Interactive. This DLC focused on the Indian subcontinent during the 19th and 20th Centuries.

I played a central role in developing the narrative content for this DLC. The process began with extensive research around the period. I prepared a database of important individuals, and events, that shaped the 19th and 20th centuries of the Indian sub-continent.

As I built this database, I also worked on potential Journal Entries that could occur in the game. Journal Entries are the primary narrative element for Victoria 3, they provide the player with cultural context and tie the mechanics to the ground reality of the world they are simulating.

Writing these entries involved understanding the mechanics so that the prompts resonated with the gameplay mechanics. I wrote pitches for journal entries and then worked with the incredible team to develop them further. I wrote brief but compelling bits of dialogue for the chosen ideas. These written so they to quickly immerse the player. Uunique illustrations, drawn and created by the art team, accompanied these vignettes. I worked with the art team to come up with fresh ideas and to ensure cultural accuracy.

Besides writing journal entries and coordinating with the art team, I also helped the design team better understand the history and culture they were simulating. The goal was to create an authentic, immersive experience.

Here are some examples of the entries that the player encounters in the game:
